Endowments support students, faculty

Public and private higher education institutions have established endowments as a way for alumni and friends of particular institutions to financially support current students and faculty through voluntary gifts. The Kansas University Endowment Association was established in 1891 and has provided more than $1 billion in support to KU graduates, as well as current students during that time. The support for KU Endowment is broad-based. For example, in 2006, 43,000 individuals provided support to KU through KU Endowment.

Endowments are funded through gifts by Kansans and KU Alumni. There are more than 2,500 separate endowment accounts which donors specifically direct to fund student scholarships or education expenses, as well as toward recruiting and retaining top faculty in all fields taught at KU. The total of continued giving as well as KU Endowment's safe and prudent investment strategy ensures the gifts and their directed benefits exist for perpetuity.

As described in recent news reports, the U.S. Senate Finance Committee is reviewing how endowments are used by private and public schools such as the University of Kansas. Below are fact sheets that clearly explain the benefits of the KU Endowment to students, faculty and staff, and by extension the entire state of Kansas. A copy of the 2007 KU endowment annual report is also available.
