Federal budget process underway for FY2009

The U.S. House and Senate have completed the first part of the annual budget process by passing resolutions identifying the budget priorities for the federal government for fiscal year 2009, which starts October 1, 2008. The next step will be for a House-Senate conference committee to reach agreement on a final version of the resolution.

The budget process is closely linked to the annual appropriations process. The KU Office of Government Relations is in direct contact with the Kansas congressional offices on the need to increase support for key federal research and education programs. Overall, these offices are very responsive and inclined to send congressional letters in support of key agencies. Keith Yehle coordinates these requests and can be contacted at kyehle@ku.edu or 864-7100 if you have questions about the budget process of specific agency funding letters.

Several weeks ago, Senator Pat Roberts joined with a bipartisan group of senators asking the Senate to budget enough money to fully fund the America COMPETES Act. A copy of the letter is linked below. To stay updated on letters the Kansas congressional delegation has signed that benefit KU and higher education, please keep returning to this site.

KU is active on Capitol Hill in lobbying in favor of many federal programs during this budget process. A copy of the budget priorities being advocated by KU and the Association of American Universities is also linked below.
